After 2 days traveling north across the China Sea, we arrived in Hong Kong early this morning. As soon as it became light, I stepped out on the deck and realized it was cooler (65 degrees) AND it was raining. This was only the second day of rain I experienced since I left on January 21 and the first on a port day. So, I couldn’t complain.
My first view of the city could have been New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. (picture attached) My tour was entitled “Scenic Highlights.” Our first stop was Sky Terrace at the peak of a tall mountain. In theory, one could get a 360-degree view of Hong Kong. The cloud level was so low you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, let alone a panoramic view. Oh, well! You can’t control the weather.
The next stop was Stanley Market. Since 1973 this market has become a busy tourist area selling clothing, handicrafts, leather, silk, cashmere and souvenirs. Judging from the packages the 45 of us brought back onto the bus, the shop owners did quite well…especially selling umbrellas!
Next, we visited the renowned fishing village of Aberdeen, home to hundreds of people who spend their entire life on the water. We had a short sampan boat ride where we saw the boat houses of the fishermen/women. Given that most apartments are 500 square feet (!!) it was easy to understand why people chose to live on their boats. (picture attached)
Our final stop was at a jewelry factory where we learned what went into making the high-end pieces and had an opportunity to purchase them. I didn’t see anyone come back on the bus with a bag so I think we were a disappointment!
We arrived back on the ship around 3 pm. Rather than head to a restaurant for lunch I attended Afternoon Tea in the Queen’s Room. This was a first for me! Since I hear a Tea is being planned for OLPH in the spring I thought it might be nice to see what is involved. The little sandwiches, warm scones and small deserts were just what I needed to keep me going until dinner at 7 pm. I suspect the one at OLPH will be a nice event and, now that I’ve experienced one, look forward to the Edgewater version.
Tomorrow many of our passengers are leaving the ship and heading for home. I don’t have a tour planned since I have to move to another cabin (5 doors down the hallway from my present abode). When I booked this trip there wasn’t a room available for all 6 weeks. Not that much of a hardship I plan to use the day to do laundry and settle into my new room.
Feb. 20 and 21 we will be at sea as we head to Shanghai for a 2-day visit. I have tours planned each day and will catch up with you whenever I can.
